ATARDECER - Oh María José/Escúchame

MAD 005

Sello: Madmua records

7" + LIBRETO + PEGATINA

Atardecer was born in 1972 from the union of several musicians from Vicálvaro groups. José Luis (the bass player) and Vicente (keyboards) came from a band called Géminis II, which they had formed at the age of 14 with Antonio Cabrera and Dioni (drums), who in turn was also active in the progressive music group Poder. Later, José María (voice) and Javi ‘El Niño’ (guitar), aged 14, who had fired in the Tuna de Vicálvaro, were added. The roster is finished by José Luis ‘Josefo’, sound technician and the ‘pipe’ of the quintet. This is how Sunset sees light. All of them were rabidly young, ranging in age from 14 to 18.

The beginnings were very hard due to the economic hardships. All belonged to humble families, without resources. Despite the fact that they were teenagers, they worked and delivered their salary at home. Acquiring instruments and the necessary equipment to perform concerts was very complicated due to the very high price of all these objects. The only solution was to go to the second hand and collect money in raffles and guateques.

Once that goal was achieved, they embarked on the adventure of playing in front of the public. They parked their personal tastes to undertake a popular repertoire, with rumbas, pasodobles and, above all, the songs of summer and in fashion at that time. There were also versions of the Rolling, Creedence, Santana, Free, Status Quo, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. A sacrifice that opened the doors to performances in the festivals of the towns of the Madrid Community, which provided generous income. They interspersed their own songs and made an important name for themselves in their area of influence, becoming idols in towns of Jarama such as Mondéjar, Carabaña, Tielmes, Orusco and, above all, in their small homeland, Vicálvaro, where they were celebrities.

Acquired this new status, they faced the purchase of quality instruments to take a leap and transform their sound to fit in discos, nightclubs and even bullrings. It was a turning point that heralded great things. They signed a contract to play on a luxury cruise that took them to England, the Canary Islands, Jamaica, Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago. They were 50 unforgettable days since some had not even seen the sea.

That trip, almost an epic, endorsed the aspirations of the band. It helped them to make sure that they reached people of different nationalities. As a curiosity, in the cabins of the ship in Caribbean waters they composed ‘Listen to me’, inspired by a Trafic song that they had heard in Trinidad and Tobago.

Back on land, home, they devoured an intense summer full of bowling and commitments. They were the prelude to the possibility of recording his first –and ultimately- last album. Side A, ‘Oh María José’, was the hit best known by its followers and was even covered by other orchestras. For side B they had assigned the theme 'Sunset'. But Manuel Rodríguez Nevado, the producer, convinced them not to include two similar melodic compositions. He recommended something more strongly. There they rescued ‘Listen to me’.

With that single released by the Fase label in 1974 as their credential, they enjoyed a wonderful year, full of concerts and illusions. The takeoff of Atardecer seemed unstoppable. But, like so many gangs of the time, military service got in the way and blown their hopes up. In October 1975 Vicente was sent to the Sahara, in April 1976 José María was sent to Almería and in June 1976 José Luis to Pontevedra. Dionisio, who was the oldest, was exempt, and Javi was too small. The dream faded.
