13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS - The Psychedelic Sounds Of 13th Floor Elev

Sello: International Artist

Texan group 13th Floor Elevators - led by Roky Erickson - must rank as one of the most interesting American garage acts to emerge out of the late '60s and were one of the frontrunners of psychedelic rock. Through melding bluesy guitars and lo-fi, fuzzy effects with tripped-out lyrical play this is music that sounds genuinely far out, as on the rolling 'Roller Coaster', its rhythms twisting and turning in unexpected permutations and the paranoia stomp of 'Reverberation'. The narcotised sprawl of 'Kingdom Of Heaven' sounds like walking through another person's dream while the searing 'Fire Engine' is rollicking piece of deranged rock & roll. Opening track However, 'You're Gonna Miss Me' shows the band capable of keeping things tight and succinct, a sharply executed pop song that shows a keen melodic gift. All in all, a magical trip of an album that has lost none of its strange power.
